Since ancient times, the data processing has been done by humans. Humans also find mechanical equipment and electronics to help people in the calculation and data processing in order to get results faster. Computers that we see today is a long evolution of human inventions of ancient sejah mechanical or electronic devices.

We have a computer and supporting devices have been included in every aspect of life and work. Computers are now capable of more than ordinary mathematical calculations. Among them is a computer system at the supermarket Kassa who can read code groceries, telephone switch which handles millions of calls and communications, computer networks and internet  connects various places in the world.

After all of the data processing equipment since ancient times till now can we classify into 4 major groups.

1. Equipment manuals: the data processing equipment is very simple, and the most important factor in the use of tools is to use the power of human hands
2. Mechanical Equipment: the equipment is mechanically driven shape by hand manually
3. Electronic Mechanical Equipment: Mechanical equipment is driven by the motor automatically by electronic
4. Electronic equipment: Equipment that working full electronically.

Generation Computer

Initial generation of computers began since the computer created by humans began to use the stored program concept in 1946.

Although previously been popping up various types of computers, such as analog computers in 1931 by Dr. Vannevar Bush at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Then the first electronic digital computer by John V Atanasoff who finished in the year 1942, computers are the drivers of the birth of the first generation computers.

Generation Mainframe

Year 1946 is the beginning of the first generation of computers, starting with made ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator). Computers these days have thousands of vacuum tubes for a single computer, the physical size large enough, and need a place large enough. These computers are generally used to calculate the accuracy of the shot. Want to know how to program this computer? Namely by linking and cut the cable and and use the contacts.

Computers in this generation process is still slow, and consuming high power, and power savings are still little. ENIAC itself at the time it took place more than 500 m2, and using vacuum tubes. ENIAC was not the only computer in this generation. In addition, there are computers ENIAC other emerging, among which:

* EDSAC (Electronic Delayed Storage Automatic Computer), which is a computer with the first stored program. Computer is made by the mathematician John von Neumann and her team. These computers made since mid-1940 and operated in 1949 at Cambridge University, England.
* ACE (Automatic Calculating Engine) made by Alan M Turing since 1945, this computer has implemented plong card usage as a medium for input and output.
* SEC (Simple Electric Computer) is a computer that uses a magnetic drum for memory storage. This computer was made in 1950 at Electric Computer Laboratory of Birkbeck College, University of London.
* LEO (Lyons Electronic Office), in 1951, is the first commercial computer in the UK.
* EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer), in 1952, is the first program stored computer made by Americans.

Generation minicomputers

Computers in this generation is a refinement of the previous generation machine. The language used is no longer pure machine language, but have used high-level language, making it easier for the program. The components used have started using transistors, so they can make the computer the size is much smaller compared with the first generation computers. This generation is the generation of the emergence of minicomputers, and the price was much cheaper when compared with the previous generation. Computers are entered in this generation are:

* PDP-1, which is produced by the DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) which was introduced in 1959,
* PDP-5, is the first minicomputer,
* UNIVAC III,
* IBM 7070

Generation Microcomputer

This generation used signed with IC (Integrated Circuit) that can accommodate several electronic components at once in a very small size, of course this makes the computer measure also far less direct than the previous generation of computers, as well as electricity use dropped dramatically. IC itself was first created by Jack Kilby in 1958. Computer that appears on this generation of which is the IBM S/360 is a third generation computer first. In addition, UNIVAC 1108, NCR Century series, etc..

Innovation is important in this generation is software compatibility, among several machines.

Generation Internet and Web

This generation started since 1970, use of large scale integration (LSI). At this time the rise of computer macro (macro computer). Intel issued a first processor in the world known as the Intel 4004 in 1971. In 1977, Apple issued the first personal computernya. This generation has allowed a computer with no software in it, and the software should be programmed using assembly language.

Developments not only on the machine itself, but also move on to the network between computers. Local Area Network began being implemented in many places, and the U.S. defense department began using the Internet Protocol.

Pervasive Generation Computing

This generation is the generation that began to leave the use of desktop computers. Various technologies to implement in computer integrated with other technologies, in a very small size, and smart enough capacity. Where in this generation, a person no longer use a computer, sitting down and facing dikursi computer on his desk, because the computer has joined with various devices such as palmtops, mobile phones, etc.. This technology also has been able to connect one device to another device using the Internet.

Generation Changing Economics of Computing

In this generation there is a change from the field of computational economics. If the first komptuter prices so high, because the size, capacity etc., at current price of the processor, memory and other devices is very cheap. Plus the implementation of biotechnology or bioinformatik. In the past where a technology is considered not possible, at this time what might yet be possible. Informatikawan including the desire to make computers more human beings who are able to develop themselves in accordance with the technological capabilities at that time.
